William Caslon

English engraver and type founder who established Britain's first major type foundry around 1720 in London. His Caslon typeface became the dominant typeface in England and the American colonies, famously used for the first printing of the United States Declaration of Independence. His types were so popular that the expression 'when in doubt, use Caslon' became a common saying among printers.
