W.A. Dwiggins

American type designer, calligrapher, book designer, and illustrator (1880-1956). Coined the term 'graphic design' in 1922. Created 18 typefaces for Linotype including Electra (1935), Caledonia (1938), and Metro (1929-30). Known for elegant book designs and sophisticated understanding of type at text sizes. Pioneered the concept of 'M-formula' for understanding letterform construction. Wrote influential texts on typography including 'Layout in Advertising' (1928).
