Gustella Inline

TYPE BY Gustella superfamily, designed by Thomas Thiemich, was published in May 2019 on Type By launch, next to Cobertura, Rosalinde, Fakt Mono, and Fakt Stencil.

A rare cherry on the pie — this could be its shortest and most eloquent description of Gustella. It was conceived to catch and endear the graphic designer's eye, and it succeeds just that, with Brio. Placing Gustella in the not-so-distant past, it might be related to the extreme slab serifs — the ones we see in Hollywood Western movies, mostly used to compose the word 'WANTED'.

This late nineteenth century 'WANTED' model, which was already over the top, was nothing compared to the lettering of the hazy 'universe' of Hippy-culture and its sense of freedom [created by its lettering]. This surely contributed to the acceptance of high contrast treatment within the letters, which simply cannot be more extreme, or more against the grain of tradition.

In the seventies, the uber-high-contrast phenomenon slowly penetrated graphic design but kept belonging to a subculture of sorts. Graphic designers took out the strong waves and somewhat tamed the extreme contrast: just as we see on the record sleeve of David Bowie's Hunky Dory album (1973).

Four decades on, such extreme display designs have returned and ready to embrace one of digital technology's greatest gifts: precision. And, in skilful hands, the level of contrasted 'juiciness' can be cranked up significantly, so the style might enjoy a second life.

Gustella answers that challenge to its fullest, yet it is much more than just a skilful re-drawing. It's a contemporary design and it succeeds in bringing novelty to the reverse-contrast design niche. Thiemich's mastery shines in every Gustella variant, from the Solid to Boxed, Inline, and the spectacular Stripes version.

Gustella superfamily consists of four weights of roman designs across four families: Solid, Stripes, Inline, and Boxed. All variants share identical metrics and can be used independently or overprinted to a spectacular effect. Its character set includes stylistic alternates, figures (each in tabular and proportional widths); fractions; comprehensive superiors, inferiors, numerators and denominators; case sensitive punctuation sets; mathematical and monetary symbols; arrows; standard and discretionary ligatures (with their stylistic alternates); and a complete range of accents for all Western, Central and East European languages based on the Latin script.

Gustella fonts are available in OTF CFF, TTF, WOFF, and WOFF2 formats. Legacy font formats are available on request.
