Fernhout
Fernhout is a geometric display typeface inspired by Wim Crouwel's 1963 modular lettering system created for the Van Abbemuseum's Edgar Fernhout exhibition poster and catalogue. Commissioned by Thonik for Dutch Design Week 2021 (Europe's largest design event), David Quay and Stuart de Rozario expanded Crouwel's systematic approach to include lowercase, figures, and punctuation. The typeface is constructed from rectangular blocks, quarter-circles, and angled indentations arranged on a strict modular grid. Design challenges included handling diagonal strokes and maintaining legibility in complex junction points while respecting the rigid geometric system.
