Atkinson Hyperlegible

Atkinson Hyperlegible is an innovative sans-serif typeface designed by Applied Design Works in collaboration with the Braille Institute to significantly improve readability for people with low vision. The typeface prioritizes character distinction by ensuring that no two glyphs can be confused with one another, departing from traditional typographic conventions. Each letterform includes distinctive features: single-story 'a' and 'g', open 'R', 'C', 'S', distinctive numbers and punctuation. Available in Regular and Bold weights with matching italics, Atkinson Hyperlegible is free and open source under the SIL OFL license. The design was informed by extensive consultation with Braille Institute clients and research into legibility principles. An expanded version, Atkinson Hyperlegible Next (2025), offers seven weights with variable font support.
