From the foundry

Elegancia is a hybrid typeface that bridges the gap between past and future. Its high-contrast design takes inspiration from the Didot styles of the French printing tradition. However, its overall proportions and details are crafted with the sensibilities of a modern sans serif: a large x-height, flat and sharp terminations, squared dots, and simplified, symmetrical letterforms. Together, these diverse design features bring the Didot legacy into the digital era, where elegance and classicism meet technology and rationalism. Originally created in 2019, Elegancia has been refined over the years to be more versatile. Its delicate thin strokes reveal greater beauty at large sizes, while maintaining a quiet, understated presence at smaller sizes. Through its subtle expressiveness, Elegancia is tailor-made for content such as fashion magazines, luxury exhibitions, art publications, futuristic fiction, or modern literature… In short, Elegancia is a digital Haute Couture typeface! Finally, it serves as an anthology to the 19th century typographic taste. The characters blend original designs inspired by a variety of historical sources. For instance, the regular styles draw on examples made by Nicolas Pierre Gando, Ludwig & Mayer and Jules Didot. Meanwhile, the black styles trace their roots to the Normande genre, exemplified by Figgins’ French Gros Canons. However, Elegancia is far more than just a historical collage. By simplifying certain details and removing their mannered features, the letterforms gain a renewed sense of clarity and simplicity. Traditional flourishes, such as teardrop terminals, felt dated—too firmly anchored in the past to resonate with today’s zeitgeist. In many ways, Elegancia’s design process echoes the approach envisioned by Imre Reiner and Ernst Schneidler nearly a century ago.
