Substantial is an experimental typeface from Overlap Type, Kel Troughton's foundry established in May 2023 with an unusual design philosophy: release projects with letterforms that overlap on purpose. Drawing from graffiti writing traditions where overlapping letters are the norm, Substantial embodies this philosophy through carefully constructed grotesque letterforms. The typeface demonstrates how deliberate overlapping can create visually striking and distinctive characters while maintaining readability and typographic functionality.
