Formale Grotesque
The 'Formale Grotesque' fits into the typographic tradition of sans serif typefaces dating back to the late 19th century. The starting point was a found object, an alphabet board from the 1930s with capital letters. A design that is not a response to an existing grotesque or neo-grotesque font, but the interpretation of an attitude. Lowercase letters were derived from the capital letters. With a low stroke weight contrast, it takes a fresh approach in mixing geometrically constructed and dynamic forms. Throughout the entire font development process, large-format drafts were drawn by hand, as they were common before the digital age, to explore the quality between the perfection of the computer software and the interpretative qualities of an intuitive drawing line.
