In the 1950s, as computers began to appear in Europe, the French language lacked a settled term for this new device. The Anglicism "computer" was commonly used, which concerned linguists and scholars keen on preserving the purity of the French language. In 1955, the company IBM France, preparing to launch its new IBM 650 machine, faced this issue. The company tasked its linguist, Jacques Perret, a professor of literature at the Sorbonne, with finding a suitable French term.
