Tolbert Lanston

American inventor who founded the Lanston Monotype Machine Company, inventing the Monotype mechanical typesetting system patented in 1887. Born in Troy, Ohio, he worked at the U.S. Pension Department before devoting his life to developing his typesetting machine.
