Nicolas Jenson
French engraver, pioneer printer, and type designer who carried out most of his work in Venice. Originally master of the royal mint at Tours, he studied printing in Mainz before opening a press in Venice in 1470, where he created one of the finest early Roman typefaces that established the proportions used in printing ever since.
