Matthew Carter

British-American type designer (born 1937), widely regarded as one of the most important living type designers. Son of typographer Harry Carter. Began career cutting punches for Enschedé in the Netherlands. Created Georgia and Verdana (1996) for Microsoft, optimized for screen legibility. Designed Bell Centennial (1978) for AT&T phone books, solving ink spread issues at small sizes. Co-founded Bitstream (1981) and Carter & Cone (1992). Other notable designs include Miller, Galliard, Snell Roundhand, and Yale. Received MacArthur Fellowship (2010) and TDC Medal (1997).
