Gerard Unger

Dutch typeface designer (1942-2018), one of the most respected type designers of the late 20th century. Known for his theoretical contributions and highly legible typefaces. Created Swift (1985) for newspaper text, Gulliver (1993) for phone books requiring extreme economy, and Capitolium (1998) for Rome's signage. Taught at the University of Reading and wrote influential books including 'While You're Reading' (1997) on typography and reading. Received the TDC Medal in 2009.
