Christophe Plantin
Christophe Plantin (1520–1589) was a printer and publisher. Dated work on record includes Buys Garamont’s punches (1561), Type specimen (1567) and Polyglot Bible, begun (1568). A later typeface carries their name: Plantin (1913).
Biography
French-born humanist printer and publisher who worked in Antwerp. He founded the Plantin Press, one of the largest publishing houses of its time, and made Antwerp a leading centre of European book publishing. He bought and commissioned type from punchcutters such as Robert Granjon and Hendrik van den Keere, and his firm continued under his successors until 1867.
